Times Table Mastery Keyrings

Build multiplicative fluency AND understanding, with these dual representation cards.

  • Pupils can see the structure of each times tables as they work through the keyring, offering opportunities to study patterns and connections between them.

  • Each double-sided card is printed with a coloured array that represents the times table. One side of each card shows the multiplier (number of groups) first and multiplicand (thing to be multiplied) second, and vice versa on the other side. This allows discussion, for example, 6 x 3, being thought of as 6 lots of 3, and 6 three times.

  • Do your pupils spend much time simply describing and playing with arrays? Do they see them just as a collection of dots to help them count or can they see the relationship between the two dimensions of an array?

  • Research shows many pupils’ understanding of arrays is shaky. They may struggle in UKS2 and beyond because they are unable to adapt or apply their multiplication knowledge. Arrays can help pupils generalise, adapt and interpret so that they can solve problems they have not encountered before. Deeper understanding of arrays might help a pupil see; commutativity, conservation of area, the distributive and associative laws all of which they encounter in the KS2 SATs and beyond.
