Science Vocabulary Dice

A hands-on resource for retrieving science vocabulary and using it with understanding. Developed by the Primary Science Teaching Trust (PSTT) the foam dice comes with a sample set of 18 topic-related, age appropriate scientific words.

  • A full set of vocabulary cards including over 700 scientific words is free to download from https://pstt.org.uk/resources/science-dice/ [pstt.org.uk] [pstt.org.uk].

  • They are applicable across all four UK curricula and cover all science topics for ages 3-12. There is also a teacher guide which gives comprehensive suggestions about how to make the most of using Science Dice in the classroom.

  • Each vocabulary set consists of an A4 page of six words which, when cut into separate cards, can be inserted into the pockets on one dice. Teachers can use complete sets or mix and match words to suit the particular needs of their children.

  • In the guidance report, Improving Primary Science (EEF, 2023), the first of the six recommendations highlights the importance of developing children’s scientific vocabulary so they can use it with understanding and participate effectively in science. Science Dice provides an engaging hands-on approach to put this recommendation into practice.

  • The Primary Science Teaching Trust (PSTT) is a charitable organisation helping to improve the teaching and learning of primary science across the UK.
