Introduction to Bar Modelling

A versatile tool from addition to algebra, widely used in the Singapore maths method.

Overview

  • Bar models are tools for helping children to visualise relationships between elements of a problem. Bar modelling will help children to develop mastery. Using this kit generates concrete as well as pictorial representations. The kit contains all that you need, including problems to solve, comprehensive guidance for teachers about how to use the kit and how to develop children’s conceptual understanding.

  • Activities are provided on high-quality printed A4 cards within the set. Questions get progressively more difficult and will include some larger numbers. This is deliberate since the aim is not to teach children HOW to calculate but for them to learn how to decide WHAT needs to be calculated.

  • In Years 2-6, our other bar modelling resources will help pupils build confidence and understanding about calculating – from addition to more complex concepts about fractions, proportion, ratio, percentages and algebra.

  • Designed for both individual and group activities, the set suits varied teaching styles and helps educators effectively introduce bar modelling concepts, focusing on addition, subtraction, and number representation. This approach aids understanding and retention of fundamental maths principles within Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
