Busy Blocks and Balls

An open-ended collection of blocks and wooden spheres that can be utilised in various ways.

• A versatile wooden resource ideal for loose parts play. Encourage children to make choices and test their ideas as they explore and experiment. Largest blocks measures L50 x W13.5cm.

• Children can engage in construction by balancing and building in many different ways. As children handle the carefully crafted, smooth wooden items they will develop their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

• Scaffold children’s mathematical learning by asking questions such as; ‘can you find all of the balls to fit into this block?’, and ‘how many balls can you count?’ Older children can match quantity to numeral and carry out some simple addition using the blocks and balls.

• You may wish to extend the use of this open-ended collection by incorporating it as part of children’s small world play. Use the blocks and balls as construction materials for building roads, pathways, houses and anything else an elaborate small world environment may need.
