British Birds Identification Wheel

An easy way for children to identify local birds that visit their school gardens. Simply point the arrow at the image of the bird you want to identify and facts about their diet, habitat, wingspan and number of eggs will be shown on the wheel.

With full colour photographic images, each hand-held wheel features information about 15 common British Birds.

The identification wheels enable children to explore their local wildlife independently in the school grounds, or they can be used in small groups on wildlife walks. The detailed facts can be used to fulfil science curriculum requirements on identifying and naming a variety of common animals including birds, as well as for understanding simple food chains and how living things live in habitats to which they are suited.

Written by Susanna Ramsey, the creator of ‘The Natural Collection’ series of workshops, which she has run in primary schools since 2010. With themes focusing on local wildlife, food webs, habitats and life cycles, Susanna has now run curriculum linked workshops for over 20,000 children from Reception to Year 6.
