Customer Comments
In the short space of time that I have had experimenting with the Talk Tracker, it has proven to be an invaluable piece of hardware within my own Year 2 classroom, as well as that of my colleagues. I have used the Talk Tracker within various Curriculum areas and have found that it supports learning and teaching, as well as enhancing assessment for learning opportunities. The Talk Tracker records children speaking in their natural environment, and can be used across the Curriculum. For example, within numeracy, I found the Talk Tracker to be particularly useful within our 'problem solving' lessons when learning to 'Use and Apply' our maths. The children are used to working in mixed-ability groups on a given maths problem, and I usually plan myself in to 'float' around, observing each group. However, I often find that time is restricted, and my observations are somewhat limited. After an initial explanation of the 'Talk Tracker', I placed it in the centre of one group and then 'left them to it' choosing to observe other groups. I was somewhat dubious to what I would hear when replaying the mp3 file back, but was pleasantly surprised with the results. After the first two minutes of obvious whispering, the children clearly forgot about the Talk Tracker and proceeded with the task in hand. I found it particularly interesting to hear which children naturally took the lead, commenting "right, where shall we start?" and "I think this is the first clue." I was also pleased to hear the children independently praising each other and commenting on progress made: "James, you are really good at this." I was able to use the 7 minute clip for quick assessments in 'Number' and 'Using and Applying' in maths, as well as 'Speaking and Listening' in Literacy. Within Woodley Primary S, we are working on the development of the 'Personal Capabilities' of our children. We aim to ensure that our children are flexible, creative and proactive-young people who can solve problems, make decisions, think creatively, communicate ideas effectively and be efficient members of teams and groups. Use of the Talk Tracker in our school has enhanced the development of these key skills. For example, after a speaking and listening activity called 'Chatter Box' (Smart Science) which develops communication skills, one class listened back to a group's discussion with the emphasis on identifying positives (e.g. "Mia, you spoke slowly and clearly" and areas for development "Sam, you 'ummed and arhed' a lot". On a repetition of the activity, children were found to be taking on advice given and identified and they were able to successfully share their ideas and feelings. I have found the Talk Tracker to be an extremely useful piece of hardware to use within my classroom. A couple of areas that one would need to consider when purchasing/using one: time is needed to listen back to the files created, and this can often mean sitting through several minutes of whispering/sillyness/nonsense etc. The other issue is that one is not enough within each classroom! Ideally, each teacher would have half a dozen or so - and then extra hours on the day to listen to the results!
