Samba is a Brazilian dance and music genre with its roots in Rio De Janiero, and is considered to be the greatest symbol of Brazilian culture. Up until today, the music is still one of the most popular kinds there is in the country and is now one of the most loved dances all over the world. The history of Samba music has gone through a lot of changes over the years, and is now known as the "Music of Brazil".

A typical carnival samba band in Rio has three Surdo parts distinguished by tuning, and by extension, sizes of drum. Together these three parts create a distinctive pattern which propels and drives the samba.

Tamborim players alternate between the the main groove pattern, and other signature phrases which are easily distinguished above the other percussion instruments.

The Double Agogo consists of one high and one low bell, joined together. These are usually hit with a wooden beater to make a 'cowbell' sound, or alternatively can produce a 'clicking' sound by squeezing the two bells together.

The Ganza is a cylindrically shaped metal canister which is filled with beads, metal balls or other similar items. Those made from metal produce a particularly loud sound. They are usually used to play a rhythm underneath the rest of the band.

Claves are very important in Samba, and they are often used to play a repeating rhythmic figure throughout a piece, known as a 'clave'.
