An initiative used in schools at KS1 or KS2 to make the playground a pleasant place for everyone. Children can be chosen yearly or termly to take on the responsibility of Playground Pal at break and lunch times. Their role is to support staff in the playground, and to initiate children in games and activities, making sure everyone has somebody to play with. Schools that have adopted the Playground Pals programme have noticed a great reduction in incidences of bullying, ensuring all children are having a positive school experience.

  • Playground Pals should:

  • Create a happy, safe environment in the playground for all children
  • Allow children to develop their independence and responsibility through play
  • Provide children with a solution if they find themselves without a friend or an activity
  • Promote kindness in the playground as Playground Pals actively look out for classmates in need
  • By using the popular Friendship Stop in the playground, Playground Pals can easily identify children who may need support in making friends and joining in.

Children chosen to become a Playground Pal are also developing important PSHE skills that will help them as they grow up. They are learning how to become responsible citizens, how to look out for their friends and peers and the differences between right and wrong.
