Wisdom Stories

Each of these stories focuses on some of the key issues that face humankind and on how they can be resolved wisely. Drawn from a variety of different cultures around the world, this book offers a glimpse of people of every background and how we can learn from one another. Issues include: sharing resources justly; how people of good faith outwit the spiteful; pride before a fall; and the nature of true riches. The illustrations from Christina Balit are fittingly ethnic in nature and bring the stories to life with brilliant hues and stylish detailing.

The Jesse Tree

The inspiration for this book was the tradition of carved Jesse trees and stained glass windows used in medieval times to tell people Bible stories. Using her skills as a storyteller and her love of the Bible, the author has written a compelling story about the creation of a modern-day Jesse tree. She weaves evocative retellings of selected Bible stories with a sensitive contemporary story about the transforming power of love. 'This is a superb collection of stories, quite one of the best in this genre.' Scholastic Best Books 2004 'McCaughrean is an extraordinarily accomplished storyteller' Ian Hislop, Sunday Telegraph. 96pp, Pbk, 260 x 215mm, Ages 7+

Animals Stories from the Bible

The Bible is full of animals, who often play a central part in the unfolding of its stories, but are sometimes overlooked or misunderstood. The 8 stories in this illustrated collection are narrated by some of those creatures, each offering a unique point of view and fresh insights into their often-told tales. Amongst the menagerie, you will meet the raven that Noah released from the ark, the lions in Daniel's den, and the lamb at the stable in Bethlehem. True to the Bible yet freshly original, their stories are told with sincerity and simple faith. For teachers and parents wanting to get the most from the collection, an 'About the Stories' section includes Bible references and notes to help unpack the deeper meaning of each tale. With the addition of Martina Peluso's stylish illustrations, the result is an engaging addition to children's and library bookshelves. 48pp, Hbk, 260 x 215mm, ages 5+

The Lion Classic Wisdom Stories

This collection is a treasure trove of the world's storytelling wisdom, ranging from the must-have favourites (Axe soup, Under the Banyan Tree) to lesser known stories that are at once compelling and unforgettable. Re-told in Mary Joslin's elegant >
Saint Francis of Assisi

The life of St Francis is copiously recorded in several near-contemporary biographies. From these is drawn an account of his astonishingly influential life as a devoted follower of Jesus. There are also several stories about him and a handful of his writings which deserve special showcasing. This book interweaves the elements to create a book that can be enjoyed as a whole or tackled in shorter episodes. The result is inspiring and heart-warming. Pbk, 48pg, 215 x 260mm, ages 7+

Note: Aesop was a story teller who was credited with a number of stories and fables now collectively known as Aesop's Fables. It seems that his existence is open to question, as no writings by him survive, but numerous tales credited to him were gathered over time and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day. Many of these tales are characterized by animals and inanimate objects that speak, solve problems and generally have human characteristics.
